With reference to your despatch No.141
of 16th.May and No.195 of 22nd.June 1900, on the subject of
the supply of subsidiary coinage for this Government, I have the honour to inform you that I have with the assistance of
my Executive Council considered the question as to the desir-
ability of re-establishing a Mint in this Colony, by which a
regular supply of dollars and subsidiary coin might be insur
ed
2. I attach letters on the subject from
the Acting Manager of the HongKong and Shanghai Bank, the Man-
agers of the Mercantile Bank of India, and the Chartered Bank
of India, Australia, and China, and a memorandum from Mr.Chater
C.M.G., the Senior Unofficial member of Council.

3. Much inconvenience and serious loss
to the revenue have been experienced from time to time in
consequence of being unable to obtain supplies of subsidiar
colns at the moment when they are needed. Our small coins
are taken in large quantities into China where they are appar –
ently used in the Arts, as very few return. A considerable Right Honourable
